PEERLEES "Leela 40" (SOLD)

Peerless offers a tantalising mix of cool looks, great build and prices that belie the apparent quality. This year, the Korean company celebrates 40 years of guitar making with five very limited-edition models. Three of these are archtops: the 30s-style Monarch 40, the rockier Gigmaster Custom 40 and the understated but classy-looking Leela 40, as reviewed.

PEERLEES" Tonemaster Custom" (SOLD)

Tonemaster Custom is the upscale variant of the Tonemaster JH Special. It comes with all solid woods and a different pickups set. Tonemaster Custom kicks off with a fully hollow, double cutaway body made of solid maple back and sides and solid spruce top. The top is bound in multiple layers of binding and carved with bound "f" holes. The bridge on this Tonemaster is made of rosewood base with tune-o-matic top. It is paired with a Bigsby vibrato tailpiece. Pickup combo consists of two humbuckers. They are controlled through three volume and one tone knob. Pickups switch is a three-way toggle. Neck is made of maple with a C contour. The fingerboard is made of rosewood. It comes with 20 frets, split block inlays and 1.69" wide string nut. 

PEERLESS "Retromatic P2 Ivory"

While many new guitars of the last decade have touted authentic (or semi-authentic) “retro” features, the Peerless Retromatic represents an evolution in the retro-guitar revolution. That’s because in addition to its sexy design and vintage-inspired accoutrements, the Retromatic is refreshingly modern, giving its player the choice between a humbucker and a P-90 pickup.

Obviously, the Retromatic is a looker – a semi-hollowbody with swank art deco design. Pick it up, however, and the guitar’s modern tweaks are immediately apparent. The Retromatic is a fast shredder, with a low action set up on a 243/4″-scale-length rosewood fingerboard a on a set maple neck with a low heel profile to boot. There are 21 frets plus a 3/4 fret over the body, which comprises a mahogany block with maple laminate top, back, and sides. Practically speaking, though, playing access is limited above the 18th fret. But that befits the Retromatic’s single-cutaway, semi-hollow design – playing beyond that position doesn’t really fit this guitar’s groove anyway.

Peerless  purchases lumber, and dries and stores it using their own special process. Peerless builds, assembles, and finish all of guitars in our own facilities, not in any other countries or remote places. Having total control of production  is how we can ensure the quality of our guitars, not to mention four decades of experiences and research.

In late 2007,  our factory moved to  Gimhae within Korea. This new and sophisticated facility allows us to be able to build even better instruments to match the growing expectations of guitar players all over the world, including  new Carved Archtop Guitars - with great resonance and craftsmanship at very  reasonable prices.
